Things We’ve Handed Down
Twelve Letters I Leave For You
Chapter 1: Disappointment With God
When was the last time you cried?
I admit that’s a strange way to begin this letter. I should start with a joke
or a fascinating story or a surprise. But as I write you, I begin with that question. Think about it. When was the last time you cried?
What caused you to cry? Did you resist the enticement toward tears? Did you apologize when the moisture fell?
Many people pursue the life goal of keeping any tears from dropping from their eyes. Tears seem to diminish control—our desired companion. But liquid finds times to drip, or fall, across faces. It’s healthy for our bodies but embarrassing for some strange reason to ourselves.
Crying is a needed experience. It is a healthy encounter.

AI Featured
I just finished Chapter 1: Disappointment With God, and I’m facing a situation RIGHT NOW that requires this wisdom. A close friend is blaming God for the death of his child. How do I respond in a way that means something to this grieving, angry parent?
James Martinez – Death has the potential—even though we believe in a wonderful heaven, a wonderful eternal life, and a wonderful whatever-else-we-mightwant-to-say-here—to leave us disappointed. Possibly disappointed in ourselves. Possibly disappointed in the one who passed away. Possibly disappointed with God. I will ask you to grieve and pray. I will ask you to pray for those who are
processing and remembering, for those who are mourning and adapting, those who are facing the mingling of anger and sadness.
