Can a book really help my business?

Let me share something that drove this home to me personally. Several years ago I traveled North America extensively on business. One cold February night I landed at Chicago’s O’Hare airport and grabbed a cab to my hotel. I was staying at the Marriott Downtown. Nice hotel, but I stayed in a lot of nice hotels. I figured they were pretty much the same. I had to get some sleep for a meeting the next morning, but I was still restless from the day’s travel. I checked the bedside stand for something to read.  There was a Gideon Bible, a Book of Mormon, and a paperback, Marriott: The J. Willard Marriott Story. I picked up the paperback thinking I’d be off to sleep in a few pages. Two hours later I made myself put the book down so I could get a few hours sleep. The next morning I put the book in my carry-on bag to finish on my next flight. For the next six years, I intentionally sought out Marriott hotels and spent thousands of dollars with that company because of the connection that book made with me.

One more story. One of the first books we published was The Great Treasure Hunt. It was a little paperback that could fit in your back pocket; only 89 pages. We sold more than 300,000 copies. We sold most of those copies to an oil and gas exploration company. You see, The Great Treasure Hunt made a very good argument that oil would be discovered in Israel one day, which, of course, was where this oil and gas company was exploring. But selling 300,000 copies wasn’t the real story. The oil and gas company raised more than $100 million dollars in public stock offerings and this little book played a critical role.
