ThirdWaveI purchased another book this week. The Third Wave: An Entrepreneur’s Vision of the Future by Steve Case. I don’t know if the name Steve Case rings a bell with you. Maybe you remember. “you’ve got mail.” Steve founded America Online (AOL), the service that got America … well … online.

In the early Internet pre-history days Steve introduced us to email. Today we’re so covered with email that we don’t know if it’s a blessing or a curse. (Of course, if you’re reading this post via email, it’s a blessing, for sure ;-)). And those who still cling to their 20th century AOL accounts are considered stuck in the past by the hipper gmail crowd.

Steve left AOL more than ten years ago to found his tech venture company, Revolution, LLC. Now he spends his time and money investing in the future. That’s what his new book is about – the future. Specifically, the future  of technology as it relates to the Internet. “The Internet of everything,” as Steve puts it will change how we do everything, how we see everything and how we interact with everything and everyone. It will disrupt every old industry and market and will create new ones overnight. Nothing will be the same.

But here’s the interesting thing.

Steve Case chose to share his message about the “future of everything” in a book. A printed book.

I consume a lot of books. I’m a publisher; it’s my job. I read my author’s books, of course. I read books on publishing, business management, marketing and sales. And I read just for fun, philosophers to spy novels. I read a passage from the Bible every morning; it’s my anchor.

In the mix, I read a lot of books about the future of technology; the best ideas from the greatest minds in this century. The thing I’ve noticed about them is that they all chose to communicate their ideas in printed books. Sure their ideas are communicated in audio books, e-books, in blogs, on Youtube, and every other medium that technology has invented to replace printed books … but they still chose the printed book as the medium to launch their ideas to the masses.

Technology is a powerful thing. It definitely has and will continue to change the way we do, see and interact with everything and everyone.
